Serious Eco-Issue in food Industry

According to recent environmental news of earth.org, one third of the food is wasted or lost. This is enough for about three billion people. Food waste and loss account for 4.4 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. If it were a country, food waste would be the third largest greenhouse gas emissions after China and the United States.

There are several facts shows food waste and loss occur at various stages in developing and developed countries. In developing countries, 40% of food waste comes from post-harvest treatment levels, while in developed countries 40% of food waste comes from retail and consumer levels.

Shocking amounts of food are wasted in retail stores for aesthetic reasons. In fact, in the United States, more than 50% of all agricultural products thrown away in the United States are considered “too ugly” to sell to consumers. It is about 60 million tons of fruit and vegetables. This leads to food instability, one of the biggest environmental problems on the list.
